Preparing for Natural DisastersWhile the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center has announced that there will likely be an above-normal hurricane season in the Atlantic this year, some natural disasters aren't easily forecasted. Here are some quick tips on how to prepare for a few of these unpredictable events.

Earthquakes:

• Identify safe indoor and outdoor places to hide.
• Bolt or strap down heavy objects and equipment.
• Repair deep cracks in ceilings and foundations.
• Have disaster supplies on hand.
• Make tenants aware of what to do in case of an earthquake.
• During new construction or renovation projects, consult a seismic engineer.

Wildfires:

• Remove combustibles from buildings.
• Close windows and doors, and open dampers.
• Close all shutters and blinds to reduce radiant heating, and remove flammable window coverings.
• Shut off any natural gas, propane, or fuel oil supplies at the source.

Disaster Supply Kit

Make sure there is a disaster supply kit located in each major section of your building. The kit should include:

• A 3-day supply of water (1 gallon per person per day).
• Nonperishable food items.
